We Opened, They Opened (12 Jul)

Our 6th Open Mic night happens on Tuesday 12 July.

We’re excited to present a very special host for the night - Inch Chua! Find out more about Inch as well as the musicians who will be joining us on 12 Jul (Jaime Wong, Nigel Wylie, Johnny Oni, Tall Mountains and Quite Quiet).

(P/S: Come for our next one on 26 Jul hosted by Siti Zahidah! Details to follow.)

——————————————————————————————

THE HOST - INCH CHUA

You might know her from the popular upbeat alternative rock act Allura. Frontwoman Inch Chua steps out on her own to share a different beat.

Inspired by singer-songwriters such as Fiona Apple, Roisin Murphy, Shiina Ringo and electronic acts like Bjork, The Aphex Twin and The Postal Service.

Inch’s solo project is a clear departure from the boisterous rock singer she is known for. The material is a schizophrenic potpourri of introspective acoustic tunes and chirpy electronica. What remain unmistakable are the pint-sized singer!s trademark powerhouse vocals.

So expect her to play some arpeggios on her acoustic guitar before hopping onto laying down some looped instrumentations to create live electronic music. Not saying it’s a pure one-woman show, Inch invites the listeners to trigger off samples and be part of the creative process, incorporating audience participation into her set.

Get to know more about her music here.

——————————————————————————————

OPEN MIC MUSICIANS (12 JUL)

1. Jaime Wong

Influenced by the music of John Mayer, Ingrid Michaelson and Damien Rice, Jaime wrote her frst song at 9 while walking to school. She taught herself to play the guitar at 14 and first performed in front of a crowd at her college’s guitar concert. Since then, Jaime has performed at The Cathay’s Ben & Jerry’s Lounge, The Singapore Arts Museum, Homeclub and Timbre. Jaime was also invited to perform a set on Power 98FM’s Acoustic Lounge last October. In 2011, Jaime was picked to be the frst winner of the Noise-Timbre Singer-Songwriter Programme by professional judges.

Find out more on Facebook and Youtube, or send Jaime an e-mail here.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

2. Nigel Wylie

Nigel Wylie is a singer/songwriter just getting back to his acoustic roots. In the USA he performed under the header ‘The Once Twice’ with guitarist/pianist Michael Shewmake. After a hardrock stint, Wylie found a love again for softer genres, blending contemporary guitar effects with a coastal chill vibe. After a two year music gap, he is back a writing and performing again. Think driftwood folk meets bossa vocals at the edge of a deciduous forest. Wylie has moved back to Singapore late last year to start a water engineering company.

Find out more on MySpace or ReverbNation, or send Nigel an e-mail here.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

3. Johnny Oni

Trudging through influences like Jeff Buckley, Suede, Dave Matthews Band and an occasional Radiohead, Johnny Oni wants to step out and start playing to people. Standing in the middle, never really feeling comfortable tending to any side, Johnny has been hiding at home not knowing where home is. A cloud of many diferent contradictions, his bedroom music is confused, tattered, and hopeful. Or alternative. Johnny sings about love with a factory worker, an eye-staring faceoff, existential issues with being an uncle and single-minded simpletons.
Perhaps by stepping out, Johnny can finally find home… if only for a while.

Send Jonny an e-mail to find out more.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

4. Tall Mountains

Tall Mountains, a.k.a. Sydney Yeo, spent her time in school doing anything but studying, instead writing songs about what love is like with a dash of nature imagery thrown in. Music akin to late afternoon sunlight falling through the windows of a quiet cool room, lying on a roof talking with a friend through the night, or closing your eyes and letting your mind take you wherever it likes.

Find out more on MySpace, or send Sydney an e-mail here.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

5. Quite Quiet aka Darell Laser

An Indonesian singer-songwriter based in Singapore, Darell has been playing guitar and writing songs since the age of 14. His songwriting process begins with experimentation with diferent and unique chords. Darell draws inspiration for his indie brand of music from emotions and love and cites, as his influences, Mew and Kings Of Convenience. He is working on a solo project, Quite Quiet, in which he writes, plays, records and programs everything in his bedroom studio. He looks forward to sharing his music with the Open Mic crowd.

Find out more here, or send Darell an e-mail.

——————————————————————————————

Intrigued? Sign up for the Open Mic today! Practise your craft, network with musician peers and share your original work.  Each singer-songwriter gets 15 minutes (of fame), exclusive of set-up time. There are 5 slots available each night. E-mail us or Nick for enquiries.
